What is MBSR?

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is a program that can help you manage stress, anxiety, pain, and illness through mindfulness. Developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, MBSR uses a combination of mindfulness meditation, body awareness, and yoga/movement to help people become more mindful.

In a nutshell, it’s focusing on the present moment in a non-judgmental way. This can help you reduce the impact of stressful thoughts and feelings, improve your mood, and boost your overall quality of life. 

The course

About the course..

  1. Duration: MBSR courses run for eight weeks, with one session per week. Each session lasts 2.5 hours. There is also a full-day retreat, which happens around the sixth week.
  2. Group Setting: The course is conducted in a group setting. This allows participants to share their experiences and learn from each other, this can be online or in-person.
  3. Mindfulness Practices: Each session involves practicing mindfulness techniques. These will include guided meditations, mindful yoga/movement, and body scan exercises.
  4. Daily Homework: Participants are given homework to do every day. This will involve practicing mindfulness exercises, keeping a journal of their experiences, or other activities.
  5. Teachings: The course also includes teachings on the theory of mindfulness and stress reduction. This helps participants understand why they’re doing what they’re doing.
